BACKGROUND TO WILDERNESS LODGE ARTHUR’S PASS

Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass offers style and comfort in the wilderness. Opened in 1997 on historic Cora Lynn Station and still owned by the extended McSweeney family, we offer quality accommodation, superb New Zealand cuisine and a delightful natural setting surrounded by the Arthur’s Pass National Park. Through our network of easy walks, fun guided naturalist tours, canoe trips and farm walks you can experience the alpine plants, animals and spectacular landscapes of the Southern Alps. On our 2,400 hectare (6,000 acre) nature reserve/sheep station with its 4,000 super fine merino sheep you can also discover New Zealand high country culture away from the tourist trails. Every second day we offer a late afternoon (5pm) sheep dog muster of sheep and a merino sheep shearing using old-fashioned blades. You can also enjoy great food (dinner is usually served at 7.30pm) and our warm hospitality relaxing in the panoramic setting of our Mt Rolleston Restaurant, McLeod Library and Cora Lynn Lounge Bar. You can even enjoy tender Wilderness Lodge lamb every second night in the restaurant.

Experience Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass

Where is the Lodge? Wilderness Lodge is nestled amongst beech forest and tussock in the heart of the Southern Alps. We are an easy drive on Highway 73, 130km from either Christchurch or Greymouth. The very scenic and relaxing Tranz Alpine train runs daily between Christchurch and Greymouth. It traverses our farm and stops in the village of Arthur’s Pass only 16 km (10 miles) west of the Lodge.

Here also are some of the special things that you can do from Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass

  • Join our nature guides to canoe on Lake Pearson at the eastern end of our farm and see rare Crested Grebes. Then climb high on the Craigieburn Range for grand views and discover alpine scree plants or explore the sacred Kura Tawhiti reserve with its magnificent limestone castles and rock climbing.
  • Explore the McKay Moa Forest track to climb Wild Boar Hill, traverse the Broad Stream Gorge then relax back in the Mt Rolleston Restaurant with a cool Canterbury sauvignon blanc
  • Spend half a day with Farm Manager Neil learning about a high country merino sheep station then at night enjoy delicious Wilderness Lodge lamb.
  • Climb with your guide to the Main Divide of the Southern Alps to see the world’s biggest buttercup, alpine flowers, waterfalls and glaciers of Arthur’s Pass National Park.
  • Above all be able to relax, sit and watch the snow capped Southern Alps, enjoy a terrific wine list and great food
